Bird shows
Good morning all from rainy Alexandria, Virginia
Sorry for not writing more frequently but I'm promising I'll try my best. The last few years were "hectic" during my husband's illness and we were in a real survival mode so that's main reason for my absence. I want to take an opportunity to thank all of you writing about "your visits to the website" from all over the world and thanks for all of the compliments. I know we can do even better ♥
Yesterday Hilary and I drove all the way to Exton, Pennsylvania as they had a bird show and mart. WE unfortunately didn't posted any info ahead of time about the show (we'll do it for any future show). The show was organized very well (lovely brochures at the entrance door), with a large space but not many vendors or visitors. Taking into account that this is regional event we were disappointed.
Is aviculture "dying"? In these hard economic times it is normal to show signs of decline, but that much??? We have to do something in order to preserve it. There are less and less breeders just because they can't sell enough so it becomes waste of time and many can't afford even seed (these little creature aren't cheap) so this might become a large problem. Also, "showing birds" is less popular. You need to breed a hundred, not a few, birds to get a couple that are show quality (unless you inbreed them), and you have to be able to sell the surplus which is becoming harder. Prices for gouldians and society finches never been so low - is it really affordable at this point?
It is time for action. Please take a minute and think about breeding, showing, and purchasing birds to support aviculture. As always I recommend using a local reputable breeder - don't have them shipped as you never know what you have paid for. I had them shipped many years ago from very popular, reputable breeder and I got low quality birds (even without a water supply in the box), and I was very disappointed when I compared what I paid to what I received.
Here is a link for the bird club who organized yesterday's event in Exton.
I'll look for more information for any future event and if you know of any please let us know as we'll be glad to publish it here and inform as many people as possible.
Thanks for reading and have a great day/Elvira
